First Aspect of Security - Power

With the challenge of the laptop security out of the way, I'll turn my attention to another topic which I've had a fair bit to do with;

Power Security.

One of the things which is most often overlooked when considering security, is that these days nearly everything we use depends on power in some way.

Your mobile phone needs it's battery charged to remain operational.
It's not till you turn the key in the ignition and find your car won't start, that you are again reminded that even the car needs power.

Then we start to get serious.
Try turning the main power supply switch to your house off for a day (or even a few hours) and suddenly you become aware of how much we do, now depends on power.

Focusing in on this, there are several angles I'd like to explore over the next few posts.

  1. Premises security and it's dependence on power
  2. Digital electronic equipment and the effect of power loss
    (and subsequent restoration).
  3. Data security during power outages.
  4. Physical/personal security without power

Following on from looking at those impacts, I'll discuss some of the ways in which we can guard against and minimize these impacts on our lives.

Join me tomorrow to examine point 1.
